Good luck! Our dog, Penny Lane, had diabetes for the second half of her life, and grdually went blind. We were very saddened by this, but she did just fine. They say losing the sense of smell is the most traumatic for a dog, but the eyes are manageable. Initially, we attempted to have them removed, and she "crashed" from the muscle relaxing drug they gave her after she was all shaved and under anestetia. In other words, she almost died due to the drugs. So, $1,000 later she never did have the surgery and managed just fine. Play it by ear. Penny got around for 5 years w/barely any vision!

: Thanks for your kind words. We took Meadow to the
: Michigan State Veterinary Hospital this AM and
: were there most of the day. She has a full blown
: cataract in her left eye and perhaps the start of
: one in her right. She's NOT a good patient and
: it appears there may be some complicating factors
: involved in whether or not they can save the eye.
: So, the opthamologist suggested we wait three
: months and then bring her back for a
: re-evaluation to see if surgery is indicated in
: the right eye. If so, he'll do both eyes at
: once. If not...he'll check to see at that time if
: the left eye can be salvaged in spite of the
: other factors.
