Looking sexy in jeans and a blue shirt, David strides through the AC lobby and hones in on Nikki like a heat-seeking missile. She leaps up from her chair, thrilled to see him, David saying he rushed over straight from the airport to see her Gazing into Nikki’s eyes, David croons she’s more beautiful than he remembered. They hug, ecstatic. That’s very sweet, Nikki says, but she’s surprised he’s in such a good mood after a family emergency. All resolved David confides, all smiles. When Nikki asks what happened, he smoothly tells her she knows what Tolstoy says: “‘Every happy family is alike. And every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.’ Me, I’m just happy to be here with you.” Her expression faintly puzzled, Nikki laughs joyously as David wraps her in a big hug. Nikki sits at an AC table with David. She fills him in on what he missed, starting with Lily modeling for Forrester in L.A. Nikki’s sunny smile suddenly fades and David wants to know what’s wrong? Nikki sighs. It’s just that David wasn’t around for that decision. Or others. He didn’t call her, she says, looking forlorn. He didn’t answer her calls. She could’ve used his input. It was a family emergency, David reminds her, Nikki interjecting that she was frantic. David’s sorry. It was overwhelming, he explains. His great-uncle was going through a medical emergency. They live in the middle of nowhere. No cell phone service whatsoever. Nikki points out there are pay phones in hospitals. David charmingly tells Nikki she doesn’t know his family in Texas. They were super-glued to him. Nikki blurts out that she thought he was in an accident. Lying in a ditch somewhere. David soothes her, his eyes gleaming as they connect. Not a chance. He promises he’ll take Nikki to Texas to meet them someday, okay? David reaches across the table to clasp her hands. He’s sorry he worried her and he vows never to scare her again. Even, David laughs contagiously, if it means walking twenty miles to Lubbock to get to the nearest working phone. Seriously. By the way, David says, Nikki left him a phone message about a wedding-cake tasting? Does this mean, David asks happily, the wedding is no longer on hold? Well, Nikki teases, it takes tine to put a big wedding together. There’s a lot of work, and she’d better get started. David reaches across the table to mitten her hand again, his eyes alight as Nikki casts him a flirtatious glance. Brad suddenly materializes at the table. Wedding bells? he asks. How romantic. Brad proposes a toast to the to-be newlyweds. David says he can’t wait to make this woman his wife. Brad lets David know, in front of Nikki, that he needed to speak to him about business and he wasn’t in his office. When David says it was a family emergency and he’d like to talk to Brad that evening, Brad says he can’t. He has a poker game going. As if struck by a death ray, David eyes Nikki, then quickly looks down as Brad casually invites David to join them. David and Nikki exchange an uneasy glance, David saying, uh, no. But he appreciates the offer, David adds, carefully not looking at either Brad or Nikki. Next time, Brad says heartily, just as Victoria arrives, asking to speak to Nikki privately. As Nikki moves away, David shifts his glance to Brad, David on edge. While Victoria tells Nikki about Victor having an affair with Sabrina, David finds Brad at the bar, clicking off his cell after making plans for the evening. Weakly, David asks, “Poker game?” Yep, Brad says. And they upped the stakes this time, considerably. Really? David says, looking like he’s about to break into a sweat. He sips his iced tea. Brad reminds David he thought he could handle social gambling. If he still feels that way, come on by. David cranes his neck, looking towards Nikki. He sighs. “We’ll see,” David says glumly, chewing on his lip. Meanwhile, Nikki tells Victoria she’d suspected something was going on and it’s probably a rebound thing for Victor and Sabrina. Victoria is glad her mom has David so she’s not upset. Nikki assures Victoria she’s happy. She adds that a younger woman makes Victor feel young, too. It’s nothing serious. In the the background we see David alone now at the bar, looking troubled. Nikki comes back to him. A mom thing? David asks. Kinda, Nikki says. She rolls her eyes. That was uncomfortable, Nikki observes, Brad asking David to play poker with him. He asked him again, David reveals. “I turned him down.” Nikki smiles blissfully, saying of course he did and enveloping David in a hug. And we see David’s expression in a close-up, and it looks very guilty.
