David gives an interview at PVH, smoothly stepping down as COS and, with the approval of the Board, handing over the reins to Dr. Angela Hubbard. Angie thanks Dr. Hayward, saying he’ll be, ah, a tough act to follow. When a reporter asks David why he’s stepping down, David silkily says the demands of the job and his surgical duties put too many constraints on his time. Now he’ll be able to focus on his expanding family. As a reporter asks if he’s going to have another child, we see Amanda, with Trevor, and Jake watching the proceedings, surprised.
Angie says she hopes to follow in the esteemed footsteps of Dr. Joe Martin, and David moves away, happily greeting Trevor in his stroller. Jake jeers that he caught David demoting himself. David kneels to play with Trevor, amiably saying he sees it as promoting himself to a higher position, in the Daddy department. This way he’ll have more time to help out at home. Jake thinks David would be better off waiting until Amanda was a few months along before giving up his power. David stands, beaming. Is that really what he’s doing? he asks Jake enigmatically, before strolling away.
Jake and Amanda question Angie, but all she’ll say is that she made a deal with David. And she sounds none too happy about it. Later Jake and Amanda moan over not having Angie’s info to try to one-up David. Amanda wails now she has to see the fertility doctor and be under David’s watch for the next nine months. They decide to wait it out and eventually try to get custody of both babies. As Amanda goes for her appointment, Jake badmouths David to Trevor and explains the new baby won’t have his genes. He whines he loves Trevor too much to have him spend his life with David in that creepy house of his. Meanwhile, David merrily dumps off stacks of paperwork for the new Chief-In-Training at the nurses’ desk and says he’s going on break. He’ll check back in on his patient soon.
The fertility doc tells Amanda she’s healthy and ready to conceive and carry another child. They’ll collect a sperm sample from David and set a date for the AI. To Amanda’s dismay, the doc says sometimes the procedure doesn’t work the first time. It could take months.
David warmly greets Trevor and lifts him out of his stroller, lovingly telling him Daddy is here. With a big smile, David tells Jake that David had his checkup. Jake sourly says he’s thrilled. Jake wants to know where Amanda is, and David says she’s still with the doctor. Jake snarks that when David was COS he could order him to perform useless errands to the lab to keep him from Amanda. Not anymore. Cooing to Trevor, speaking softly, David tells Jake there’s something poetic about seeing him watching the door, hoping to see Amanda. Does he do that at home, too? Jake scoffs David’s in a bad mood because he’s not COS anymore, but David is all smiles as he tells Jake the only title he cares about is Dad. At the rate Jake is going he’ll get to be COS before that happens. Jake admits he’s jealous. He wishes he was Trevor’s real dad. But they’ll wait nine months and then have their own children, created out of love. It’ll be worth the wait. David beams. Keep telling himself that. A lot can happen in nine months. David gives Trevor a big kiss and hands him over to Jake, saying the nanny can change his diaper.
Amanda tells Jake she’s healthy and ready for the insemination. The doctor said it could take longer than a month though. She wants this to be over! As she and Jake hug, the fertility specialist tells David the first insemination can be scheduled in a month. David is pleased, flashing a smile. Just in time for the holidays, he muses, looking out the office window to see Jake and Amanda together. The perfect time to give thanks for his new family.
