The engine is definitely not an interference engine.
Line up timing mark with rotor pointed toward the #1 spark plug wire. There are two ways to line up timing marks. Make sure you have the correct one.
Then make sure cam gear alignment hole is where it is supposed to be.
My guess is that your cam gear is 180 degrees off.
Lift the A/C compressor out of its cradle and set aside so you can get inside distributor. Check rotor, cap, and centrifugal advance while you're in there.
