Welcome to the forum.
To start with I would recommend looking for vacuum leaks. Check around the carburetor and make sure the vacuum lines are in good condition.
While you’re looking at things it wouldn’t hurt to check out the ignition system. Are your plugs and distributor cap/rotor in good condition? Are the plug wires in good condition and of good quality? You might want to also measure the resistance of the ignition coil if you have a meter, the insulation will break down in them sometimes.
I would also recommend checking the “codes” that are causing your check engine light. There is a diagnostic connector that you need a jumper to connect a couple of pins that tells the computer to flash the light to give you the codes. Once you have counted the flashes you can look up what the numbers mean. If you have a service manual it should cover how to do this. If you don’t I can try and type a description of how to do this. The code may or may not be related to your current problem, but if the car has never started well it could be part of the current problem.
Good Luck, Ra
