I have an 85 Chevette and the battery died a while ago and I have bought a new one. A few days later, I drove and hit a bump and my car ran only on the alternator. When I turned it off, I had no power at all (no lights, nothing). I have to push it from one side of the street twice a week and one day after a few weeks I noticed the dome light was on so I started the car and it ran. I drove it around and hit another bump and the car stopped working when I turned it off. I can't find the problem. The battery is fine (and works in other cars). I have changed the positive wire that goes to the starter to no avail. The ground strap seems fine (tested the voltage from the ground screw on the front chasis to the positive strap on the starter and it reads 12 volts. I unplugged the red wire that goes from the started through the firewall (there's a connector on that wire near the harness) and it reads 12v... From there what do I have to look at? It has no power (no lights, nothing will turn on). Help!
The car is an automatic 85 Chevette, Canadian model, 1.6l, no AC or power steering.
