get underneath it (use chocking blocks so it doesnt roll on you - dont trust the parking brake) and grab the drive shaft. try jerking it up and down. it should feel fairly solid if its not, usually that rear rubber bushing is shot and only guy in existance that has any is Rick Drake on here.
if ones an automatic diesel i wouldn't buy it. flex plate WILL crack eventually and NONE are in existence - then you have a fancy lawn oranment.
the rest is basic car stuff - does it smoke on start up, knocks when snapping throttle, gears that make weird noises, odd vibrations at certian speeds etc.
