My 84 has been making more clanking and rattling lately than I can stand. I am the original owner, so I guess its safe to say I know the source of every sound my baby makes and why. Now I am Hearing clunking the thunking, from the rear that makes her undriveable and I am physically quite unable to spend tons of time under her, seeking the issue. I have emptied the tire well completely, Been " up close and personal with the coil springs that I replaced five or so years ago. It from the back. The springs give mo in indication of fracture, and I have completely removed the shocks, just things one step at time a hoping to get lucky.. Frankly, there is nothing in the rear end that should be able to make the noise I hear. IT can sound like the hatch is open, its not :-) and I admit my body will no longer allow me to spend a day diving under, pulling and yanking on stuff for no reason other than hope. IT makes no noise when violently bounced up and down, and I know its an impossible thing to be detected using this kind of communication, so I spend a lot of time looking at the shop manual, trying to envision what can be broken or misbehaving. Guys, this is the simplest rear suspension I have seen. As You know, with no shocks the rear end will stay on the ground as the body goes up Nice for changing coil springs, but good grief, I cannot think of anything else to look at. "back in the day" I live in a home with a full shop garage and by now would have my baby way up in the air until I could figure out the source of the mind. I know no one can diagnos noise over the net, but I know many have R&R'd thee rear end so I would ask if there is something beneath the rear I might overlook that is making my ride into a candidate for the crusher.IT rides so rough I fear the rear hatch will pop out:-) and no chance of playing a DVD as it bounces too much. I hope everyone is having a great 4th holiday. Believe me I know its a milllion to one shot anyone can venture a comment I might use to find the banging and clunking, but I thought I would just give it a try. I don't know which is worse, the noise or the awful ride, but I would like to deal with it if I knew any idiosyncrasies in the chevette rear suspension that may be making me crazy:-) I want very much to keep a car that makes anything coming around today look totally inefficient. I recently had th smog testing done and stared in disbelief at the CO which was 0 at both RPM settings. I think it will go another year before the HC rises just beyond max and forces another catalytic. As I am the original owner, I at least want to get the last 4,000 miles onto it to move beyon 200K best car I ever owned. Gotta keep it somehow :-) thank you folks, I know its a huge inquiry, John in Utah
