You should not have to pull out the M/C beyond unbolting it from the firewall and tilting it out of the way. I have replaced quite a few starters and just unbolt it and move it aside. It is a pita to get at. I go at the bolts from the front of he engine with a few extensions and a u-joint at the socket. A little duct tape keeps the u-joint from flopping around. Kind of takes some concentration, but it is not that hard. Rick Drake has posted several times on how to swap the starter by unbolting the motor mount and tilting the engine. I suspect he knows best ;-) I just learned how before I ever came across his good advice and once I figured it out, it was not hard. No need to open the brake system at the M/C John
