In the meantime I had a beaten to death Pontiac 1000 sitting in my driveway for several years. It was rotted and broken but I just didn't want to scrap it, even though I knew I would probably never get it back on the road. The other day I found a note on the car inquiring if it was for sale. In a rare moment of sanity I decided that it was time to get rid of the 1000... so I called the guy up. As it turns out the guy was eyeballing the 1000 for two years but every time he banged on my door there was no one home. I told him the thing was shot but he said he still wanted it. After some more conversation about T cars I mentioned that I have the '77 and have been looking for a five speed setup for years. He chuckled and said he recently picked up a low mileage Chevette that was rotted but happened to have a five speed. I figured he was mistaken and it was a four speed but he said, nope, it is a five speed. So to make a short story shorter we made a deal... the 1000 for the five speed setup and some cash. The guy told me he would be at my house today with a trailer and all the five speed parts. He showed up right on time. The deal was done. The Pontiac was down the road.
As for the fate of the 1000... initially he was reluctant to tell me what he was going to do with the Pontiac, thinking perhaps that I was some kind of a Chevette purist. I told him it was now has car and he could drive it off a cliff if he wanted to... provided he told me where and when so I could film it. As it turns out, the car is going to be prepared for a demo derby that will be run in November in upstate NY. His son is going to drive it. If my schedule permits I'll be there filming the 1000's final moments. Should be fun.
