I bought my 84 chevette brand new. Thanks to all the great folks here, a lot of skill, a GM shop manual, and a serious addiction :-) I am staring at 198,000 miles. I use it for fun drives or long trips on nice days, so its almost always on the freeway here in Utah and I swear I am not making it up, I do 50mpg at 55 mph and laugh all the way back home. Its an incredible car.
Every year I sweat the gubmint annual inspection and emissions crap, and this week its up again so we will see if AMerica will let me keep it. I can no longer work on it. I changed the plugs cap and rotor today, a major undertaking for my broken brain and body but it was a joy to get it done.
My sadness is that I think the coil springs, at least one of them have broken and its a brutal, bumpy, noisy filled, awful sounding ride :-( a look underneath shows that the passenger side is totally compressed and looks to have collapsed onto itself. Like riding on a brick with no bounce at all. I can still get the usual bounce from the bumper up and down shock test, which confuses me. I replaced the stprings maybe 10 years ago, so I am disapointed that even if it passes the tests I may have to give it up, as I can in no way do the work, even as easy as it is.
Anyway, just a hello from a long time happy owner and a shout out to Rick Drake who helped me many times with parts and advice.
My " baby" is red and rusting out so I am hoping to overcome the sadness of losing it.
Merry Christmas to you all! Lol!
John
