OK, so after some more research, I kind of understand. Assuming the various sites were accurate, FWD/RWD only refers to the space between the center of the wheel and the hub. RWD have from slightly negative to slightly positive offsets, and FWD have highly positive offsets. So, a FWD wheel would sit farther inboard than a RWD. Interestingly enough, not all RWD cars take RWD wheels. In fact, from what I can tell, the Chevette appears to take FWD wheels, as the centerline of the wheel is inboard from the hub. I can't really find any reliable sources for this, but here's what I did find.
FWD or RWD? (new window)
This site has way too many basic spelling errors to be considered reliable, but it does agree with, and explain reasonably clearly, what I found other places.
Chevette wheel list (new window)
And of course, dieselchevette.com is a wealth of info. This page not only has a list of wheels that will work, to varying degrees, but it provides some measurements for stock Chevette wheels.
Your mileage may vary. Track not for use with all cars.
