The way I do it comes from the GM shop manual. Rick has done way more than anyone else, so if you like his method, you can't go wrong.
Once you remove the inspection plate, you will be looking at the flywheel. You will have to turn it by hand, maybe a screwdriver to pry against the teeth to rotate it. Not hard to do. Just a magic marker to note the start, and set there turning it to see if the teeth are in good shape all the way around
I hate to ever state absolutes, but its not likely that the flywheel would have been hurt. Its a lot tougher than what seems like pieces of your starter teeth.
