Don't put too much stock in Chilton. Its a good reference, but its not always the most accurate.
First, this is the method Rick Drake uses. Its in the archives:
The simple and fast way to remove the starter is as follows: Disconnect the negative battery cable.Remove the 18MM nut on the engine mount drivers side.Remove the lock washer and spacer washer. Put a block on a jack under the trans. and the back of the engine. Jack the engine up until the back of the cam rack is just about to touch the heater case. You can the easily disconnect the wires from the solenoid and starter. With a 15MM swivel socket remove the inside bolt Then remove the outside bolt. Pull the starter out towards the front of the car. There is enough room to do this without touching the brakes or manifold. It takes me about 15 minutes do do this. Install in reverse.

I read his method after having done several of them a different way. If you are up for his way, that seems like a good method. My way uses several socket extensions and a universal joint, and I unbolt the master cylinder and pull it towards the fender to make room for the starter to come out. If you want more details, I can expand on the how to.
Replacing the starter is really not a big job. From what I have read of your work on the car, you can do it much easier than you are picturing it, imo. You are welcome to pmail me a jbrush@gmail.com and I will try to explain how I do it. It will take me a bit of time to go look at my car, and be able to explain it, but its not that big a deal. I think Rick's way is better explained for sure :-) and he does know what he is doing so even tho I never tried it, there is no doubt he knows what he is talking about
All I would add is that Rick can do it in 15 minutes from his expertise and experience. I would add a bit more time for your first time effort :-)
