Yes it sounds like your starter gears which mesh with the flywheel gears when the starter is engaged have an issue. Likely, one cog has come loose and is rattling loose in the housing surrounding the flywheel.
I fully understand your frustration with all the issues you are having. My Vette has been a challenge to my sanity as well.
It could also be that the starter has no teeth at all left connecting with the flywheel which is why it does not start the vehicle. Wish I could help but am a long ways away in Canada.
