So, my '81 Scooter (or, as the kids I work with call it, The Death Chevette) has started leaking water pretty badly. It only seems to do it when I've been driving it hard. A trip through town doesn't seem to make it leak, unless I've really been on the gas, but a 10 mile trip on the highway definitely does. Last night, I made probably three 10-15 mile trips, and 6 or 7 shorter, 3 or 4 mile in-town trips. I leaked out the entire overflow reservoir.
Once I stop, it quits leaking, even if I leave the engine on. There's still enough water left over on the crossmember and sprayed around the engine to drop a pretty good puddle, though. I;m pretty sure the leak is coming from the area around the front of the oil pan, and I think it's on the passenger front corner. There's a spot where I can see the sealant on the oil pan gasket, and the blue paint on the engine. Everywhere else is pretty thoroughly coated in oil/sludge.
This sounds disturbingly like a water pump issue to me, but it's never made a sound. I need to get an assistant to rev the engine while I'm under the car, I guess, but does anyone have any advice? What should I look for, specifically, to determine if my water pump is leaking?
Oh, and to make things even better, my backup Chevette just started spraying brake fluid out the grill when I try to stop. I'm hoping that's an easy fix, but again, I need to find an assistant to help me. The wife is, how do I put it, not good at following instructions.
