Clarification:
( which could go on all day, and in an attempt at being succinct, you can never fit in all the intangibles.... )
Please note that I never mentioned horsepower.
And when I mentioned that the stock carb can't be improved for gas mileage, I didn't mean to imply that it can't be tweaked a bit. Just that an aftermarket won't best it for MPG. Frankly, there is more gas mileage improvements to be found in a perfect ignition curve than by trying to improve your A/F mixture once it's perfect. Which is fun to achieve also.
( and for those of you who think differently, just make sure that BOTH carbs are working perfectly. Sure, the factory carb may be malfunctioning, and you replace it with a Whizzbang that does better, but how is that a valid test ? )
But it's really just a bit. The most important thing to realize, and it's hard for most people to comprehend:
GM, Ford, Mopar, Toyota, etc. are competing against each other.
If someone REALLY THINKS that 1MPG was left on the table, so that the competition can get a better number on that birth certificate that the dealers puts on windows ( sorry, window sticker ), you are mistaken. Lots of people buy a Pinto 'cause it gets 27½ MPG as opposed to Chevette getting 27¼. Really.
Of course lots of people believe that the "oil companies" won't let that secret 200MPG carburetor be released to the public.
Happy tinkering
