From Dictionary.com:
2: to run at low power and often disconnected usually so that power is not used for useful work (the engine is idling)
I stand by my usage. If I floor my accelerator, I could be said to be idling at 6000 rpm. If you check a Chilton manual, you will find the word idling used in exactly this manner.
