So I've got a 1982 automatic, with 95k miles on it, that runs like crap. I need to do a lot of stuff to it, but money is pretty tight right now. It starts hard, even in warm weather. In fact, it starts like it's -20 when it's 70. Also, the tranny doesn't shift right. It flutters between gears when I hold a steady speed. The torque converter locks up at 25, which is factory spec, I know, but even when I'm accelerating hard it locks up for half a second before releasing. And I really have to floor the gas to get it to kick down a gear to accelerate. The car also just generally runs poorly. It's hard to hold it at 55 mph, and if I'm going up a big hill, forget it. 45 is the max. The service engine light just kicked on, and it goes on and off in a pattern that my other Chevettes have taught me is O2 sensor failure. This may be related to my lack of a catalytic converter. Or not, what do I know about exhaust.
So far, I've replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and fan belt. I think I forgot to replace the PCV while I was at it. I haven't checked the choke coil yet. I half-ass checked the EGR, and it seems functional. I haven't changed the tranny fluid, so I'm sure it's still the factory charge.
So, what do you think I should do next to get the most bang for my buck? I was thinking transmission fluid change.
