I don't question your mechanics experience, but did you go to a body shop? A good one? If there is 'good' metal to work with, they will know it, and if they weld a new piece into place, or whatever they have to weld in there, it will be stronger than new. I should think they are a better judge of what can be done,, especially if they want the job and the money for the work. :-) Maybe they can help you save your car? John
