1985 chevette 4 speed trans

Have a 1985 chevette engine & trans in a British Coach Works MG Replica. I think it only has a about 10K miles on it. When car is cold all is OK. When driven to operating temp, trans shifter, either will not shift into reverse (can't push floor shift down) or, sometimes alows access to reverse with no lock-out. Have changed trans fluid to synthetic, but seems to be no change.
