Thank you all for your responses. I had it in the shop for other reasons and asked them to adjust the rear brakes for me and they said they couldn't get them to work right. I don't know exactly what they did, but I assume they backed them off. They told me they thought I needed a new proportioning valve.
I will try your suggestions once it's back on the road again from a dead transmission (I was surprised to find a used one and the guy happens to be driving here from about 400 miles away --I just wish it were a stick and not an automatic).
