I can tell you from experience that the self-adjusting brakes worked great on a 10 year old Chevette, but by the time they get 29 years old, they don't. If his adjusters even turn anymore, and if the cogs on them haven't worn down, and if some jackass hasn't switched the left and right, then he's a lucky man. If that's the case, however, the system is designed to only adjust the shoes out, not to let them back off. The replacement adjusters I bought aren't a perfect fit and they allow my shoes to back off during braking. That's not really a good thing.
