Hi Jody
I'm sure your parts store there will sell "carburetor cleaner", but the good stuff is no longer in it.
Without the creosotes and methylene chloride, it's been severely weakened.
There was never anything like carb cleaner that did the same job. Been at it for over 25 years.
If you can locate an ultrasound machine, that would do the job.
Another thing you can try is brake cleaner, however, here in Ohio, they have changed that formula also, and it's nowhere near as strong.
Soap isn't going to do much. The caked on varnish and stuff won't be touched. However, a good product for white powdery corrosion in the float bowl is drain cleaner. When in a hurry ( like I usually am ) I used sulphuric acid for just a couple of minutes ( or less ) and then neutralize with baking soda.
Try the "watered down" carb cleaner that is being sold now, it may do the job for you. Hell, in your state, real carb cleaner may still be available. Just look for the magic methylene chloride on the label. Among other things.
