"Simon Just go into the rear shoes and back off the adjusters a couple of turns Your rear brakes are going on before the front ones"
*************************************************
Complete waste of time. The brakes are self-adjusting. They'll adjust right back up.
The reason the rear brakes are locking is due to the fact that the later calipers have different diameter pistons than the "old" calipers, which require more hydraulic(foot)pressure to achieve the same amount of braking as the "old" calipers. This increased pedal pressure causes the rear brakes to receive more pressure than the front calipers, thus applying more rear brake.
Keep in mind that there is no "proportioning valve" per se on a Chevette, but simply a hydraulic switch which activates your "BRAKE" warning light when there is a lack of hydraulic pressure in either front or rear brake systems.
To correctly remedy the brake locking problem, change the rear cylinders and master cylinder to the later style to match the front calipers.
