Does it sound different when you crank it over? Don't try cranking it again without checking the belt first. If the belt broke you should have noticed it sounded different when you were cranking it as half the motor isn't spinning. I'm going to guess you never changed the belt?
If the belt broke take the valve cover off and have a look.
My brother had a vw diesel and had the same thing happen to him, he was at a stop or moving slowly when the belt broke. Actually the belt didn't break, a pulley did, but the belt came off anyway. We put it all back together and it was okay. You might get out lucky too if it didn't smack too hard.
