Hi Jody!
Unfortunately, carburetor cleaner has been banned by our govt. Which annoys me greatly. I wish I had known this last year, I would have stocked up. As it is, since I still do quite a few carbs ( amazing amount recently actually), I'm about to start scrambling myself to come up with an alternative.
As far as old carb cleaner goes, there were a few that were untolerable. Berryman was horrible, I opened one of those one time and immediately shut the lid. Threw it away.
I used Hydro-seal, or a few other brands I can't remember the name of.
There is a Hydro-seal II that is "environmentally friendly". Doesn't clean worth a damn, but you might try that.
I'm going to have to switch to it myself.
Lacquer thinner is a very good cleaner, but wear gloves ( very good gloves ) and don't breathe the stuff. Use it outside. Do not immerse plastic or rubber !
I really don't know what to do. I have been looking for a year for some NOS carb cleaner, but it has all been confiscated.
Good luck
