There are a number of methods. Rick Drake is the expert having done more than all of us put together :-) but I just unbolt the master cylinder from the firewall and move it outwards, and the starter comes out through the top. Its awkward, but not difficult.
I don't thing it can come out from the bottom, but then, I have only done four or five of them.
Moving the MC seemed the easiest way for me.
