nothing really 'bolts in' for a Chevette. The Chevette uses a 10SI alternator with a special front housing, the mounting ears are further out than standard ones. The ears need to be further out because of the rubber mounts in the alternator bracket. I remember hearing about a swap along time ago that involved using part of a cadilac alternator for a 'bigger' alternator, i don't have any info on it though.
The other year i tried a couple different things to get a bigger alterntor in my Chevette without much luck. I finally ended up going back to the 10SI with a 12SI diode pack. The biggest problem i was having with factory alternator was that i kept burning up diodes. So i ended up trying the 12SI diode pack and so far its lasted just over a year, longest i've gone on an alt. in a long time. There is some modification to the case to do this but i can try and go back and give some details if there is intrest.
If your lights are dim and you haven't added a lot of extra stuff to power it could be your alt is bad or a couple other simple problems. Dirty grounds, clean them all. Check the ground wire to the alt., its thin and i have seen them fail. Does your idot light come on if you have the key in run without the engine on, if it doesn't you'll need to get this circuit working because its what causes your alt. to turn on (usually a bad bulb). What kind of condition is the fan belt in, is it loose or glazed, a slipping fan belt can lower the alt. speed affecting its ability to charge. How old are your head lights, they do get dimmer with age. Are the head lights adjusted right, If they are pointed too high or to the sides it can really affect your vision, the adjusters have a plastic nut that can be easily damged/ broken.
