I'm seeking information about Joseph Gardner of SH Co. I think his father was either Jesse or John Gardner who probably died in the very late 1700's or early 1800's. I have found a free black household with the head of household listed as "John of Joseph Gardner" , I'm curious as to what this type of name notation means on a census.
