This is very interesting. My ancestor was named George Wray or Ray who I believe was born in the 1740's probally in Virginia. I think he might have been related somehow to this Ray family. He had sons Solomon,Samuel and Mark Ray and probaly other children. His son Samuel died in 1856 in Alabama and his obit said he (Samuel) was born in 1775 in Albemarle co va (it might have been Albemarle Parish in Surry co Va) and the the family left Va when he was a little boy probaly in the late 1770's or early 1780's and went to Wilkes co Georgia. I know George was in Wilkes co Ga by 1786. This is what is interesting. There was a Howell Ray that seemed to always live close to George Ray in Georgia. Could that have been the George Ray that was mentioned in the will of John Ray who died in 1796 in Southampton co Va? Have you seen George Ray in your research? I think George might have married a Rachel and went to Brunswick co va about 1769 where he bought land with a Henry Yarbrough and George received a land grant in 1771 in Brunswick co Va. I found a George ray and wife Rachel who attended the Powelton Baptist Church in Hancock co Georgia in 1791 and left that church in 1798 and that was the same year George bought land in Jackson co Ga so I think it was probaly my George Ray. Hancock co Ga was next to Wilkes co Ga and George Ray's land was near the county line. I think George Ray or Wray might have been related to the John Ray you listed. Would yoou have any info where Howell Ray went if he left Virginia? Thanks,Ross
