I am tracing the ancestry of our Meriwether/Merryweather/Stokes lineage. Joseph Merryweather married Mary Green (or Grant) in 1799 in Baltimore, MD. They had a son, Richard Dorsey Meriwether (b. 1800 in MD). Richard moved to Petersburg, VA ca. 1830 and married Sophie Margaret Stokes (b. 1811 in Petersburg). Two of their children--Sophie Virginia and Charles Gilmer Meriwether were born in Petersburg--Sophie in 1834 and Charles in 1838. They all moved to Mobile, AL in 1839. I am running into brick walls on the ascendants of Joseph Merryweather and Sophie Margaret Stokes and wondered if there are any resources in Petersburg or Dinwoodie County that would have birth/marriage records with details on the background of these families.
