the old mills at campbells bridge, this bridge goes between the town of ettrick, chesterfield co,va., and the city of petersburg,va.
there were old mills there for many, many years.
they were there during the war between the states, and lasted until about 1915 or 1920`s.
most of them were cotton mills, but i dont know the names of them. this is one of the bridges used by our southern boys as they left petersburg in 1865.
the old battersea dam is just up the river a little bit from this bridge.
today, the bridge is there, not the same bridge of course, but in the same place as the old ones.
as you leave petersburg you go over the bridge and you go to ettrick, but virginia state university is on the hill to the right side.
all thats left now of the mills are some bases of the buildings run over by the water or by trees and brush, but can still be seen. va. state university has made a park there also.
i have a photo of these old mills taken about 1864 - 1865, if you like to see it.
e - mail me at raymondk48@aol.com ( all small letters ) and i`ll send it to you.
