Hi Jim,
I had just got out of hospital after having a hernia op and plates, bolts and pins put in my hand all within seven days. I couldn't sleep so I was on the computer at 4:00 am in the morning when I read a post from the Canadian Metal Detecting Forum saying that the poster was praying for the people that had lost their lives in the New York attacks.
I remember saying to myself 'what the bloody hell is he going on about', then I turnt on the TV. My whole life took a different course that day (as the rest of the world did) and it has never been the same since.
After 10 minutes watching the second plane go in and the reports I went and woke Judy up. I remember telling her what had happened and that there was going to be a war.
I remember saying to myself 'how can people do this to other people'.
We, as did everyone else didn't take our eyes off the TV for two or more days. Judy and I spoke about our three sons and if there was a war would they be called up. I have been in the Australian Military for over 30 years and I wasn't worried about myself as I had been deployed three times before that date and would go if I was told to. I was worried about my sons. Thank God it didn't come to that but the thought stayed with us for months.
It is good to see some of the steel go to good use.
My son Mark was in Cav and served overseas and my son in law Ed was in the same unit as well and served in Iraq. I've done three Peacekeeping Tours and I'd sooner go overseas that my children. It doesn't matter how old they are they are still your kids.
All the best,
Pete
