They are in cats. Colour is carried on the X chromisome so you can have a black or an orange cat with with or without white(not a colour, but void of colour), but you can't have a calico male - XY. A female is XX so they can have any of the the above. So only on the extremely rare fluke that a male is born XXY (it's happened in people, I think they're himaphrodites?)then there are never any calico boys.
I wonder why this is not true in dogs too?
If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.
