Here is my (non-breeder's) point of view:
I think the two most important qualities are health and temperament. That should be the anchors of a breed. What good is a flashy bulldog that can't physically sustain it's athletic nature, or is a potential fear biter? That just leads to potential heartbreak for someone.
Obviously the standard does come into play, but for instance I have watched the degradation of the once magnificent German Shepherd, now reduced to a sloped, hocked shadow of it's former self...but wins in the show ring.
So if the standards lead to a degradation of the structural quality of an animal I don't place them as important as health and temperament.
I want a sound, confident bulldog that I can let loose in the yard to run and play without fear of injury. A bulldog that I won't have to spend thousands of dollars to try to maintain a good quality of life for. A bulldog that accompanies me through life calm, confident and unflappable no matter where we go.
So, those are my priorities ~ I want to see breeders emphasizing the structural soundness, health, and temperament of their dogges...not the amazing coloration of their latest litter.
