Posted by Bessie I've posted an excerpt from an article about Ovarian Cancer: Here is a little blurb about the Gilda Radner program: Actor Gene Wilder helped establish this program back in 1991 in honor of his wife, Gilda Radner, who died in 1989 of ovarian cancer. "The Gilda Radner Cancer Detection Program is a nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating ovarian cancer research, specifically aimed at ovarian cancer screening in high risk women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. Founded in 1991, the program has collected data for more than 1200 participants. The Gilda Radner Cancer Detection Program contributed valuable data to our understanding of ovarian cancer in high-risk women, particularly biomarker data, genetic and familial factors. There is still much to be learned about the various modalities to detect early-stage disease. The purpose of the current clinical research program is to offer women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation an opportunity to participate in an ovarian cancer screening program, using state-of-the-art and investigational strategies aimed at early detection. Screening will involve semiannual blood tests (CA-125), investigational tumor markers, and 2D and 3D ultrasound with doppler imaging.. Additionally, samples of blood will be taken and stored for ongoing and future research studies. Questionnairres will be used to address the role of epidemiological risk factors (i.e. reproductive, hormonal, lifestyle, diet, exercise, smoking, etc.) in ovarian cancer risk, and to describe the psychological impact of continued surveillance on carriers of BRCA mutations. Cedars-Sinai is committed to discovering an effective screening test for ovarian cancer. As medical knowledge advances, we will be able to better define who is at risk and how to prevent ovarian cancer. Hey guys! I am participating again in this years Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancer. I am sticking to the same team I had last year because it's such a great cause. "Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection." I am providing a link to my website on the revlon run/walk in hopes some of you may want to dontate to the charity. It is 100% tax deductible. I am alos posting information about the charity and ovarian cancer
"Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death due to gynecological malignancy in the United States. This year an estimated 23,100 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S., and 14,000 women will die from this disease. Most ovarian cancers occur in postmenopausal women, with over half occurring in women over the age of 60 years. Therapeutic advances have had a modest effect on the overall survival rate during the past three decades. Currently only 46% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will survive longer than 5 years. If disease is detected before dissemination beyond the ovaries, however, the 5-year survival rate is 93%. Unfortunately, only 24% of ovarian cancers are detected at this early stage. Development of an effective screening program for early detection, especially in high-risk women, is a top priority for reducing mortality due to ovarian cancer."
