Posted by TIER Two local to our area fundraisers this weekend we’d like to let you know about. Saturday morning, June 9 2007, there’s a pancake breakfast to benefit the Norco Animal Rescue Team (by the way, red flag warnings are out again – it’s dry out there). Thanks for the info Ingrid! As indicated above, it is dry out here. Fortunately, the TIER residents are all doing well and drinking plenty of water. As a result, the water bill is pretty high and will continue to increase as the days get hotter. The increased warming trend has brought out those awful biting flies! Ugh! The battle is on and we are doing fairly well in combating these guys, but it is just the start of fly season. We have purchased the wonderful Immune Builder from Blue Ridge Distribution to assist BUCK & BAXTER with their allergic reactions/hives due to the flies. JAKE is also on the Immune Builder as he had a rough bout with a virus earlier this year. The virus threw several of the residents off their feed and they lost a dramatic amount of weight/muscle tone in a few days. Per the vet’s instructions (antibiotics would not help as it was a virus) we have increased the amount of pellets & hay for those residents that were hit with the virus. It still amazes me that a horse can lose weight so quickly and take months to get the weight back on. JAKE was also diagnosed with a significant heart murmur and we are watching him closely. He is still the favorite with the Girl Scout troop & Foster children group that volunteer at the rescue. Of course, Annabelle and Pedro are getting the worst of it from the flies! The flies just seem to love donkeys!! We did purchase “pony” sized fly leggings for these two, along with CASHEL fly masks with nose extensions. Since the flies go after sweet Annabelle the most, we are using SueAnn's old flysheet for her. The fly sheet is really too big for this little girl, but it is better than being chewed up by those winged pests!! We are also giving the residents Black Sunflower seeds & Omega Fields Horseshine, which seems to be giving them all nice coats. Dolly has shed out her rusty colored winter coat and is now that deep chocolate palomino color thanks to supplements and lots of brushing by the volunteers. As previously noted, we had our Annual Used Tack Sale/Fundraiser last month. Donations of tack were not what they have been in the past and we raised less than half of the funds we usually receive. The funds from this fundraiser are used for the maintenance and care of the TIER residents. We have just purchased 3 tons of pellets and it is now time to order more hay. As you know, hay prices have skyrocketed and we are in need of funds for hay. We deeply appreciate any donations you may be able to give. The farrier has been out and everyone has had their manicures. Pilgrim apparently had a small abcess that had dried out, but everyone else is fine. They all look forward to their volunteer visitors so they can be brushed, talked to and given treats. They especially love their treats of vanilla wafers, carrots & horse cookies from Blue Ridge Distribution particularly since they had a visit from the local tooth fairy and had their teeth floated if needed. Thank you to you all for being there for the horses!
