Posted by DJL In December of last year a long time friend of mine brought a lady by. This lady wanted to get into horses. My friend was going to help her out and in fact the horses were going to live at her house until this new person built their horse facilities. She went home with my old pinto mare(age 20), who she just wanted as a pasture pet (this mare had grown to fast as a baby and had contracted tendons and had been a pet and mine her whole life-which included three trips to Alamo and 1 Colic surgery). She also took another Pinto Arab mare, an Arab Gelding and a yearling colt. My contract stipulated that the old mare was to not EVER be sold, given away or anything, that she was to come back to me NO MATTER WHAT. Again I was assured how wonderful this lady was and how my friend would be her right hand. The horses lived with my friend at least six months. The lady spent 20K to build corrals and stalls for them and they moved to her house, just about a mile from my friend. Any time I talked to my girlfriend and asked how they were doing I was told great. So Sunday night I get a call from a lady. She is telling me of a grey two year old colt that is at a Lancaster rescue. Says he was in bad shape when they got him. She also wants me to give the rescue $350 to pay to register him. She was vague on where he had actually come from, and I immediately began asking about the other three horses. She had no idea but said she would ask these folks that had the colt. I immediately called my friend. At this point I was hysterical and could hardly get the words out. I could only envision my old mare having already wound up at the killers. My friend was able to contact the buyer of my horses and was told "I sold the colt to a lady who really wanted him", "because of my work schedule I moved the rest of the horses and am boarding them in Burbank so that I can see them more often". After getting that story I was skeptical. I thought maybe the original lady who called just wanted to shake me down for $350 to register a horse she had bought. Yesterday I got an e mail from this woman with pictures of my grey colt, and information that my other three horses had wound up in a rescue in here in Southern California. I was able via the net to find the rescue and talked to a very nice lady there. I was surprised that with my name on the papers as Breeder that no one thought to contact me. I know when I used to help Linda M with rescues so many years ago we always tried to contact the breeder when possible to get 1) the story on the horse and see if they wanted to get the horse back. This woman told me they don't have the time to do that. Indeed my horses were "donated" to her back in August. The reason they did not take the colt was that he would not load. My gelding is now living in Clovis, my younger pinto mare has been given to a 16 year old, and much to my dismay SPOT-who has contracted tendons and has lameness issues is being ridden by a ten year old. What is distressing is that we only rode Spot ten times when she was three and realized it caused her too much discomfort. She was never out of the round pen and that was EIGHTEEN YEARS ago. I am in the process of trying to find where I have the bill of Sale for Spot. I of course can find every other bill of sale I have but not that one. I am told if I produce ths bill of sale saying she has to return to me I can have her back. I am grateful that my horses were taken in by a good hearted honest person. I am horrified that the lady that bought them never thought to call my girlfriend or me. Both of us would have taken the horses back in a heartbeat. I am so heartsick words can not describe it. I have hardly slept since Sunday. I can not believe that as careful as I tried to be that my horses wound up having this happen to them (again I am supremely grateful they wound up where they did, but that seems just dumb luck). Thank you for letting me vent. Please pray that these horses will now be safe the rest of their lives. I offered to take the grey colt back but was told "they have too much money invested in him and they want to see how he matures" apparently they have no plans in gelding him. I had no idea rescues were in the stallion business. <sigh>
