Posted by Jo In September of 2003 we made a decision to let Arnold move on (you do remember Arnold right?) with his life to a better place. He couldn't keep up on trail rides anymore and really didn't want to stay home. I talked with his vet at great length and she suggested that he go somewhere where he could be used lightly and that had a heated barn. The decision was made to donate him to Morning Star Ranch, a therepudic riding group. Since then he has THRIVED!! He is so happy, the kids love him, he loves them, he's spoiled, and wants for nothing. What better life could a used up old pack horse ask for......even his previous owner (who I do still update on Arnold) said he made the best decision in the world letting us take Arnold. He said he's very happy for the old boy. Now, on to Cocoa (my twice rescued arabian mare). In November of 2003 with Arnold gone and our borrowed horse returned to his owner, Cocoa was pacing trenches in her corral and wearing her hooves badly. I spoke with the owner of a lesson barn and she expressed interest in feed leasing Cocoa. She came and got her, Cocoa turned into a great lesson horse........but now the BEST part. During her year at the lesson barn not only did she learn a lot but she also earned the love of a dear little girl named Molly. On Molly's mom's bday they surprised Molly with Cocoa. They are competing in 4H and doing wonderfully. Cocoa and Molly are inseparable. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome for my 2 outcasts......they truely deserve where they are now and I'm glad I played a small part in thier success. We have been horseless for 2 years now, bought an RV and did some travelling. Now we are adding a new pony to our stable. He belongs to Arnold's prev owner (who I do have to say cleaned up his act tremendously, his horses are fat, cared for, and have a huge pasture). The only thing I could fault him on was foot care, but while he was on vacation he gave me permission to get the farrier down which I did. Now I will continue to do that whenever the farrier comes down for the pony. I cared for his horses for 3 weeks while he was on vacation and in that time my son fell in love with Ranger......a fat, onery, POA pony with major short man's syndrome. He's gentle, loves my son, and other than an attitude a mile wide (who wouldn't have one if they lived with draft horses) he's a good little guy. He will be coming home in the next couple of weeks (as soon as hubby puts the corral back up). We are travelling to the lower 48 next summer for a month and Ranger will spend that time with a John Lyons trainer to hopefully work out some of his issues. Speaking of that trip.......we will be in the same area as TIER and hope to visit......maybe even shovel some poop, lol. Sorry for the book, but its good to be back.....I hope to post more of our Alaskan adventures. BTW, this is Ranger:
