Posted by marm The funding is the payment for USDA inspectors. Since these companies are not US-owned, it's entirely possible that a) they will bring in their own inspectors and b) they will simply find other ways to circumvent the current export rules and let the meat be inspected at destination. I mean - shipping it 'uninspected'. That means the limited control the current USDA inspectors have over the enforcement of current *humane* slaughter policies/procedures will be lost. The 'downer' part also has a hole - it only keeps them from being used for human use. They're still going to be killed (who knows how humanely) and the carcass used, if only by being dumped in the offal trucks and sent to the rendering company. There's no way these folks will call a vet to have the animal euthanized - they'll just pull out their pistol. I trust they'll know where to aim it! And have a gun of sufficient caliber to do the job in one shot. Just a couple of things to consider... are we actually hurting more than helping?

You all know I'm as anti-slaughter as the rest of us, but there is a huge hole in this legislation that may well lead to dire consequences.
