My old mare has been lame in her offside hind leg since Sat. morning. At that time it was really bad, to where she wouldn't put weight on it at all but "hopped" when she put it down. I'm feeling really stupid, because I can't figure out whether it's a stone bruise or a problem in her leg, I think in her fetlock. I've been treating for both. We found a soft spot in the frog that seems sensitive, and she had some adema, like "mushiness" above her fetlock area. It's much better now, but I don't know, something is weird. The main thing that's bothering me is that today I really noticed that she is tending to stand with her hind feet camped under her, but not rocked off of her front feet like laminitis, and there's no heat or strong pulse. More like, all four feet are camped under her, and I know I've heard that means something in particular but I can't remember what. Also she isn't quite herself. Doesn't seem like she's in pain, but just not as salty as usual, kind of depressed or worn out, maybe. She's pretty elderly, we think in her early- to mid-thirties, and has a lot of arthritis, but in very good condition and everyone always says how great she looks. There are other issues with this problem that are stumping me, but I don't want to write too long a message here. Any suggestions from anyone? I'm feeling dumb as a rock about this.
