Apart from the safety angle and the added insurance for abrasion on rocks, reef etc it is also a good tool for locating just how far your fish/end tackle is out from your rod tip when fishing on those pitch black nights from the beach. 14 meters is way too much heavy mono to have on a surfcasting reel- try a length and a half of the rod and 5 turns around the spool.

I agree with Andy on this one.
The 10lb per ounce is a standard in the UK but it is definately for more aggressive casting styles, coupled with poker stiff rods.
A well tied leader knot should taper gently towards the rings and should neither slip or make a heavy clunking sound on the way out! So check your knots and if unsure..re-tie them.
As andy says it is personal preference but bear in mind that shock leaders SHOULD have some stretch in them to act as a 'shock absorber'
Because of this i always use a good quality mono such as the Drennan Greased Weasel ( dont know of the availability in the states or Aus so i buy it in bulk and get it posted!) of 60lb bs.
Hope you find what suits you best.
Ian
