Posted by ChumBucket And thanks to the article regarding Silicon Carbide guides elsewhere on this excellant site I had my wrapper use all Fugi Silicon guides. I don't know anything about these long beach rods, so this site has been a great help...half a world away. I have a video by an English guy named John Holden called Long Distance Casting. This and the internet are my teachers. This video was made in 1985, and I came up with the 60lb Mono from this source. I have fished Berkley Fireline, even prefer it on some of my reels. When I first loaded it onto a baitcaster my tackle shop warned me that I would get frequent nasty backlashes and would quickly switch back to Mono. That has not been the case at all. I love the extra feel it gives when I'm fishing for Halibut given thier notoriously light bite. I have to say that I am afraid of backlash with this new rod as the added length will really get the spool spinning much faster than anything I have ever tried before. Guess I'll have to make some casts and decide if I should just spool up straight Fireline. Somewhere I picked up a rule of thumb that a shock leader should be 10 times the test of the wieght thrown. This would seem to imply 60lb fireline for this rod. What do you think?
