Peter Goodin

Those of us who were on the island in 1968/69 will be sorry to hear of the death, this week, of Peter Goodin. He died on 25 July and his funeral will be held at Collingwood on 4 August. He had been unwell for some time. I last saw him and Carole at Collingwood a couple of years ago. Graham Salt REM 1968-69

Sam its under sad times meet you again. I was in contact with Glenis Brading and she told me Peter Goodin had already passed on. Obviously a bit previous. I'mafraid we are all reaching an age when our past memories are disappearing. I always wondered if you gained your commission and got rid of them shiny brown boots that always got you drunk. Nice hearing from you at this sad time..George

Good to hear from you George. Yes I dot rid of my shiny brown boots and exchanged them, at HMS excellent, for a pair of shiny black legs. After Dartmouth I left the greenie world and specialised in Gunnery doing a couple of 'G' jobs at sea in Argonaut & Mermaid. The rest of my navy time, apart from a spell as the Devonport Field Gun Officer in '75 was spent as a range officer at HMS Cambridge. After leaving the navy I married a WRNS officer, worked in sales for a while then got a job as the executive officer of HMS Warrior at Portsmouth. For the past 15 years I have been freelancing as a historical researcher working mainly for authors and occasionally the BBC. I live in Fareham. I still have photos (slides) of the island including some of you writing home. All the best Sam.

Morning Sam, good to hear from you. I thought youwere going to retrain as a 'jack dusty'. If I'd of known you were going to be a gunnery officer, I would have taken a more circular route around pompey. Married a wren, please tell me you married on a payday and held your reception at aggie westons. Our paths must have crossed over the years as I married a local Stubbington girl. I'm glad you kept some photographs as I had to,dispose of mine as the explanations as to their content would have put a strain on a early marriage. I came across the website by accident and saw your posting re. my father who sadly died last year. I would really appreciate hearing any memories of him that anyone who was on Stonecutters could share with me - we had very happy times on the island.

I was sorry to read of your father' death on this site.I do remember your family when you were living on Stonecutters.As I recall, your garden had a Moon Flower tree and your parents had a party to celebrate when it came out in bloom, which was just for a very short time at night. Stonecutters was always a very social place, and this was the best reason for a party we ever had. Sadly I was too young to go! Unfortunately, both my parents who knew Peter well have also died. Your mother may remember Frank and Muriel Rowe.

Hello Tanya. A surprise to see your message. My wife Carol and I were both on Stonecutters when your father was I/C. We also remember you and your mother, also name of Carol, who was an ex GPO telephonist, as was my wife. Our daughter is Paula and you may remember a couple of other children at the time, named Ruth, Wanda and Steven, I don't remember you actually out playing with them though, as you were slightly older. When I get home from work I'll have a word with my wife as she has a good memory and I might be able to post more info. Regards.

Hi Judith, good to get your message, I remember the Moon Flower very well - my parents brought a cutting back to the UK which thrived, we still celebrated it blooming (about every 5 years) when we were back. Thanks for jogging a memory!

Hi Tanya. Another memory.... Hoe was the island gardener who, amongst other tasks used to look after your parents garden. He grew the most wonderful vegetables. They had a slight taint to the flavour, but he would never disclose what he used for manure. It made your brother Jason's hair grow though. I was told that Hoe fell off the liberty boat( T4 ),one night on the way back to Stonecutters whilst drunk and drowned. ( Hoe loved a tipple every night, along with most others ! ). Regards.

Hi, not sure if our gardener was the same man, the one we had, great geardener but well I always thought his name was Toe, he was the gardener at our house when we got there, our house was Quarry house. Anyway, when we went back for a visit in 1990, he was still there in the navy offices, he actually remembered all of us, even after 14 years. Do you think he was the same man, when did you hear that Hoe had died? regards

Hi Lyndsay. It was a number of years ago now and I think the news came from one of our Army contacts. I don't think it would be the same person, as the Hoe we knew, wouldn't really of been educated enough to be in an office. He was a, vest, shorts and flip flops, outside person only. Regards.

Hello Tanya, Are we talking about ~Lt Cdr Goodin who was The Group Officer for the Mechanician Apprentices at HMS Collingwood in the late 1960s? If so, I new him and can probably dig out some photos. Regards, Mike L

Have just discovered the Stonecutters Forum and read the comment by Judith Rowe. I remember your parents very well, Frank was acting as Superintendent of the CME until his death, which occurred after I had returned to UK. But I remember him with affection, especially on Friday nights when he came to the Sergeants mess to watch the weekly film there and of course his daily visit to the CME to administer justice etc. They were a great couple
