I was drafted to Stonecutters Wireless Station in 1960 (C.O. Lt. "Lofty Rimmer) following an 18 month posting in South Africa at Cape East Wireless Station (H.M.S. Afrikander), a marriage to a lady that I met in Cape Town and a short course at H.M.S. Collingwood. That lady, Yvonne, gave birth to our twin son and daughter at Bowen Road Military Hospital in 1961. We lived at "Wuthering Heights" at the top of the hill and overlooking the senior ratings mess, the transmitting station and East Pier. During the two and a half years we were there we experienced an earth tremor and two typhoons, Typhoon Mary and Typhoon Wanda, both of which passed directly over the island. The silence during the period that the eyes were passing was "deafening". Some of the photographs in the Picture Library were taken immediately following the typhoons. The ship on the rocks in one of the photo's had also dragged its anchor over the shore cables and consequently removed shore supplied power and all landlines putting us out of touch with the R.A.F.communication centre at Kai Tak. We had emergency power but while we were not watching someone had built a high-rise building directly in line with our back-up U.H.F. radio link with Kai Tak rendering it useless, not only that, the typhoon had knocked down some masts supporting the rhombic aerials. We aquired a couple of Go-Carts from one of the HSBC bank clerks and set up a track around the soccer pitch down by the NAAFI and the rifle range. Great fun as we did not win too many football matches (To make up a full soccer team they even had to ask me to play and my game was snooker). Enough for now, maybe more later when we hear from others who were lucky enough to be based on "Fantasy Island" for a while during their time in the services.

In 1968 after 12 months detached duty at Toward TaytnuiltW/T near Dunoon living at Gortanansaig Farm. I was drafted to JSTS Stonecutters Island. Still being a single man I lived in the singlemen's quarters inside the complex. Very comfortable once you got used to the wildlife. I had previously been stationed at Rinella W/T at Malta, so there was no change in equipment and I settled down to a very happy 15 months. It was a fantastic place and I did not want to leave I made a lot of good friends there. it was during the period of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and I dont think calling the station cat meowse tung helped. It was also during the vietnam war and hong kong was the main R and R for the american troops and their families. I lost all my photographs of the island so if anybody has any I would be grateful if I could obtain copies.

Ian Charles (REM) here just found the stonecutters forum!! I am trying like hell to remember you as you must have arrived a couple of months after me . However I was a single man and lived "on Board" I remember Fred Deans ( took over his draft a few years later on the eastbourne. Chief Smith (again served with him on the Fife) CHRIS?? pope he was in the single accommodation also. There was one chap a great mate of CHRIS?? Mumberson who had a sailing/motor dingy. I used to look after the new dog we got after Buster was shot on the rifle range by who we thought was Australians. She was called GIRLIE a Chow That was a real bind seeing her on the jetty as I left for the last time. The boss I remember was Lt cmdr Goodin??? I have been back to Hong Kong a few times in the last 5 /6 years was thinking of getting a Walla Walla to have a trip out to the island before she disappears but the closest I got was using a telescope from the top of the Peak. I have amazing memories from that draft especially Henrys bar and the girls there the joint services pool at the other end of the island one squaddie especially sticks in my mind who used to spend a lot of time with us down the club. Remember the bar shutter made from SWB PA valve heat exchangers. The social nights when we invited and charged visiting ships companies SAUSAGE 'n' Mash plus strippers ( one I remember stripped to Scottish dance Music!! ( by the way I am Scottish so the accent might jog your memory) The other thing that might help is that I had a habit of going on the wander with my bed when Pi**ed! I remember George he was going out with a Army daughter a friend of Lt Cdr Goodins Daughter he even got me fixed up for a while with another of them. Another great memory was when three or four of us were lucky to get a R and R flight to Singapore / Malaysia stayed at terror barracks then train ride up to the Cameron high lands in Malaysia and stayed at the R&R camp at frasiers Hill. I have also re visited both places recently and all I can say is that Boogie street still there but certainly different from the "good ole Days. I was pensioned out of the Andrew after a injury, done a variety of jobs Marconi in Scotland and Gateshead a couple of years out in Saudi but now I am the electronics Manager for Northeast Ambulance Service where I hope to end my days!! Anyway a couple of clues to jog my memory would be appreciated As I HAVE GOTTA TO KNOW YOU MATE!! (hope you weren,t that POREL who put me on jankers two weeks before my draft finished!!!!) (I went ashore late one night to see my chinese girl friend , trouble was that I was "duty" and sods law slept in and missed the first MFV back in the morning so WAS CAUGHT!!!! regards Ian Charles

Hi Ian , read your previous and also received your other e-mail. You brought back memories especially of Buster the dog, which we found shot and had to bribe taxi drivers to take it to a vet, as animals were'nt allowed in taxis. I went with Jim Main to purchase the replacement dog and whilst I was paying for it I told Jim to check that it was a dog. Which is why we arrived back at the island with the little b###h which we called girl. I,m afraid Lt. cmr Goodin has died and Fred brading the Gunnery Officer who lived on the island.I remember the bar screen being made out of the cooling fins from the Act 9's or CV28's for theirproper title. There is some very good photographs ofSWB's on Randall Mcdowells web site on Yahoo. Ex-POREL I joined with at Collingwood 1963. Which is where I met Fred Deans who was also at Stonecutters. I remember Jim Cassidy, Topsy Moshi Turner,Jim Swaffield, Tony Quigley who married Fred Bradings daughter, Chris Mumberson who build the speedboat with Roger King for water skiing but did'ny quite buy a powerful enough engine so we went for water drags instead of skiing.I also remember Smiley the barman and Hoe who seemed to do everything else. There will probably be other names that will come back to me ,but age dims the memory....cheers George

Hi George funny how it works! one memory brings back another. Jim Main JIM MAIN!! how the hell could I have forgotten that mad drunken Scotsman?? (I was just a young apprentice drunken Scotsman) I remember how he used to pour some of his tot over a small tree just outside the mess room killed the Bl**dy thing ! that was sacrilege especially to a poor "UA". I also think if my memory serves me well that he used to climb the mast when Pi**ed Me?? I used to go walkabout!! starkers sometimes carrying my bunk with me?? remember one of the Sikh police finding me and reported to the duty Po he had found a body!! Jim Cassidy!! yep remember him well HE PINCHED KIM FROM ME!! OH and boy do I also remember KAY!!!!!!!!!!! many a sleepless night!! Glenis ? she was something else We had a fancy dress night in the club I went into the TV room for a breather and glenis and Tony came in , sat down beside me and had a snog trouble was that glenis was holding my hand at the same time!! If you remember going to get girlie you must remember that you nearly got a dog from the Hong Kong RSPCA but they asked you if there were any kids on the island. When you answered yes quite a few they said NO YOU CAN'T have this dog it "LIKES CHILDREN"!!!!! I remember upsetting the "wives one day at the pool!! I brought three of the Bar girls from Henrys bar for the afternoon. Mind you I did get some admiring looks when I took my Chinese girlfriend to the Joint services Party in the peninsular hotel!! she was absolutely gorgeous . Actually she worked for the Hong Kong tourist board and was sister to one of the Bar girls(betty)who fixed me up . Mind you the conditions were that she (Margaret) was a good girl and any hanky panky was to be reserved for Betty OR ELSE!!)Some of the runs ashore could last for days sleeping in the corner of Henrys, 0200 when it closed going to the KK club then back to henrys at 0700 for breakfast. The mamasan used to hold some money incase I ran out and needed taxi to Lothian road to get a Walla Walla water taxi back to the island. I will never forget my first run ashore I had arrived after 24 hour RAF flight and was given a transit bunk in TAMAR there was one other guy but he was waiting to travel home next day on my light , anyway I was Knacked but he persuaded me to go ashore. Started at the china fleet club My first pint of tiger was off!! and I was nearly sick I thought how the hell am I going to manage 18 months of this!! A few more pints and all was well !! went down to Wanchi had only been in the bar for five minutes and had a young girl under the table on hands and Knees if you get my drift I then remember thinking "how am I going to last 18 months out here. Smiley and Hoe?? Yeah smiley used to open the side door at ten in the morning so we could have the hair of the dog He had a house full of kids if I remember no wonder he seemed to live on the island!! and yeah Hoe seemed to do all the work. Remember that the most important tool behind the bar was a SPOON the tiger Or san Mig used to come out so damned frothy. you were saying about the vietnam war and how the yanks used to come to Hong Kong on R and R I remember if we were skint we used to go to a bar near the star ferry and if you were prepared to listnen to them you could get drink all night for free!! mind you I always remember asking one Yank Matelot what he did and got the reply "Ice Cream dispenser 1st Class!! Oh always got a zippo with the ships Crest as well. I actually went to Vietnam two years ago it was interesting to see things from the other point of view. I didn't,t remember that you came from the northeast but there again where else would a George Stevenson come from!! Durham Eh? I actually live in Durham City now myself. I used to work out of Framwellgate moor but since Durham Ambulance Merged with Northumbria I now work at the Infamous Pallion in Sunderland. Hi Everyone Iwas on Stonecutters with Fred Deans ,Topsy Turner,Buster Brown, George ,Larry Milotay etc etc.I remember Smiley and Ho and I think fanny was the Doby amah.This was without doubt the best draft anybody could ever want. Another name just come out Nick Carrington ,we had some great laughs and booze ups.Its nice to hear henrys bar is still there ,we had some great times in there.I dont know if anyone remembers but I had ago at the cool hand luke gig of eating forty hard boiled eggs ,what a day that was .Smiley thought i was joking when we asked him to boil them .I also remember Dave (cant think of his surname ).He fell off aladder inthe bar wwhen we where decorating it and he ended up in BMH with a broken back.Happy days where spent round the lido and ican remember when we brought the Girls from Henrys bar there ,didnt go down to well with the Army wives,burt what a laugh.Sorry to hear Peter Goodin is no longer with us ,he was agood boss and I rember Nick used to date his daughter.Hope this has jogged some memories . Hi Ian, It's nice that you remember me . I have often thought about my time on the island , which I really enjoyed . There are several of the crew that I would like to get in contact with, Hugh McKenzie, Lofty Fairall, Charlie Johnson (army ) , Stan woods (army ), and the army captains daughter who was only thirteen at the time but still a stunner . Having read your posting Ian, I had a look for stonecutters on the Google Earth program,which allows you to look at stonecutters or anywhere else in the world from a satellite . the island has changed a lot due to a landfill , and is now joined on two Kowloon side . However, my married quarter is still there as are some other buildings . I have always wanted to go back and have one last look place I enjoyed so much . My family lived on Stonecutters island on and around 1956, my father was in the Admiralty Police at the Royal Naval Armament Depot. My name was Patrica Dickin then and I have a sister Joan Dickin. If there is anyone who may remember me I would love to hear from you.

Hello, Thanks for the site and forum. A special place. I was stationed at JSTS Stonecutters (my first RN draft) from March 1962 until October 1963. As single lad of 19, it was a dream posting. Notable names were Lt Hannam, Nick Carter, Lofty Armour & Derby Allan. Many others too but my aged memory fails me. I have a fair selection of photos and would be pleased to send them for the gallery if required.

I dont know about stoncutters but I did do a fairly long spell at toward w/t and Gortnasaig farm.Mrs Lamont was a cheery old soul but could get a bit pissed off with drunken sailors. I do remember how perishingly cold it was in winter and going to bed with a coal fire in the hearth and still having to wear all my submarine jumpers ,socks and whatever else one could don to prevent frostbite. Hi Russ, Very sorry for the delay in responding, I kind of lost the way back to this web site due to other commitments. Back now for a while at least. I parked a heap of photographs on the site but I see that they have been moved over to FLIKR. Regarding my knowledge of a family of redheads, I am sorry to say that I do not know them, it must have been outside of my time there. The go cart that you mentioned will be one of the two that I located and purchased from the bachelors mess at HSBC. One was quite good but the other was a little on the slow side. The mechanician on the island was not overjoyed when they arrived on the island as they came under his wing for maintenance. Take care, best wishes. Jack (Nick) Carter

Well, let's see if this jogs anyone's memory. I'm Patricia (Pat) Hughes, stepdaughter/daughter of Eddie and Jill Russell. Eddie Russell was 2nd in command of the ammo dump there and we were there (with my brother Martin) from early 1965-August 1967 (aged 11-13) and lived in Magazine House up the hill overlooking Ammo Jetty. I had the time of my life there, the amount of freedom we had as kids in such a safe environment is unimaginable in these modern times. Long afternoons spent down at the Lido - I remember when it first opened. Going to school (St Georges) by walla-walla. I cannot imagine a better environment for a girl the age I was then. I have many many happy memories of those days.... sigh!

Hi Colin. Don't know if you remember me. I was one of the POs of the watch and on the Island at the same time as you. My Wife was called Helen and we had a daughter called Louise who was five months old when we arrived. Our second daughter was made in Hong Kong and was five minths old when we came home. I remember Lt Hannam and his daughter Glenda who I think was a bit sweet on you. I also remember the names you mention along with Reg Armstrong, Wally Walton, Tommy Atkins, a lad called Cheadle who's first name escapes me, Roy Sands,Pete Jeal, Jim Crampton, Alf Heard, Pony Moore, Geoff Birtchnal and Dave Pitney. There are some other faces I can picture but can't put names to. Nice to think back of the good time we had on the Island. I am in contact with Pam Nicholls who was on Stonecutters when we were. Hope that you can remember me. Regards John.

Hi Jack, Remember you very clearly, also your truly lovely lady Yvonne. What a smashing draft we had in 'Harry Rimmers' Navy. My life bucked up quite a lot after the early '60s, eventually did 40 years for the Merchant & Royal Navies. All the relatives now found their niche. Now can feel comfortable & free as nicely mobile widower. Often wonder what became of 'pony' Moore! The stories which I heard in the late seventies seemed to indicate that he was struggling a bit. How did the years treat yourself? Do hope that my comment is not too direct!

In '61 we witnessed the C.O.'s 'Frankie and Johnnie' routine as as he danced with his wife at a social occasion, after 50 years I can still chuckle as I remember. Wish, not good with words myself, someone who can describe well would write in and tell about this facinating routine.

Hi 'Pony' & 'Nick', so much to feel good and chuckle about from our Stonecutters days. Often think of Steve, big powerful water polo player, the two of us tried to build a water polo area alongside the island swimming lido, the materials where bamboo poles kept in position by wieghts,floats & underwater pulleys. The fantastic invention was hoped to be typhoon proof! No need to say how long it lasted!! The retirement goes well have managed to get some self-worth/self-respect into these later years. Hope for yourselves likewise, though it did take decades to set-up. As said previously the .... career, 40 years man & boy for the Royal Navy, & .... the family life successful family with 2 children also 2 grown up grand children was a luck/success story. Hi 'Pony', hope that the good lady whom you married & yourself are well. There was one fellow with us on the 'island' in '60-62 who was more than just a miitary mate from the old days & I am trying to remember his name! He was an Army medic! Not the Scotsman from the 'Glasgow side' but the Scotsman from the 'Edinburgh side', we were good friends for a period of years, during our time on the 'island'. Have someting to thank him for. Have said three reminiscences from the '60-62 days so far ie. The time Yvonne Carter said to us(Reg & Linda Webb and myself) in most joyous terms that the Carter family was to extend by two in the coming weeks plus two other stories, as above. The hope is others will send in some of their joyous stories soon. Take Care, at least the long hot Hong Kong summer is soon to end, chris ('garth') beevers

Hello Patricia I don't know if you remember me, I recognized you and Lynda Martin from the photograph posted on the St Georges School site. I was on Stonecutters Island the same time as yourself, we lived on MCTC side of the island, my father was in the MPSC. We were on stonecutters from Sept 64 - April 67. I remember you, Lynda and Wendy Johnson-Burt (father naval officer)coming to the Lido. I keep in touch with a school mate name of Matthew Maclean who was also on stonecutter perhaps you may remember him.! Hope to hear from you soon Best Regards John.
