Sorry to disappoint you. But the Stoddard/Stoddart etc. family does not have it's own tartan.
This is because the name originates from the border country between Scotland and England, which make the family 'Lowlanders' as opposed to 'Highlanders' and only the latter have family or clan tartans.
That is not to say that a Stoddart cannot have links by marriage to a family who do have their own tartan. The plaid piece of cloth your mother had may have been the family tartan of a another family linked in this way.
You probably need to do a bit of research into her family tree...
