Although I am not a Stoddard, I somehow feel
I have a bit of family connection. Several years ago I purchase a piece of furniture, one
of those had to have pieces, and the previous
owner gave me little bits of information, and
mentioned this belonged to the Stoddard family,
intrigued by the history of this lovely victorian
pier mirror I set out to the Cleveland Historical
Society to do a little research of my own. This
piece was sold as a fixture left in a home that
was being raised by the Cleveland Clinic in order
to accomodate their expansion, many years ago.
the street name was even changed, it originally
had a surname now known as (I am guessing) East
93rd street, Cleveland, Ohio. I stumbled upon
this site the other day, and cannot locate the
notes I had made from my visit to the Historical
Society (It resides in the building where the
Crawford Auto Museum is) Martin Luther King Drive, Cleveland, Ohio. I just wish I could find
all the notes I took. I do, however, remember
the family came to Cleveland, Ohio from New York
and that also their parents were born in New York.
In the Census for ?? year, they had a maid and
two children and Mr. Stoddard was registered as
a salesman for Stoddard Oil (Which rumors have it
merged with Standard Oil) I also ran accross, at
another antique shop, shortly after this purchase. A book entitled Stoddard's American
intellectual Arithmetic, J.F. Stoddard, New York,
August 1st, 1860. I keep that on the Marble Pedestal base of where the mirror sits. The mirror dates back 1850 or so and I believe The Cleveland Stoddard family were born in the late
1800's So this Lovely Looking Glass has some
magical attraction to me, and would love to
have some more history behind it. The Stoddard
home was near what used to be "Millionares Row"
where the Rockefellers once resided. They were
selling the wood floors, fireplaces, etc and this
mirror, since adhered to the wall, was included
in this sale, an antique person purchased and
sold to his sister, it resided in Shaker Heights
Ohio and then to Hudson, where I purchased in a
liquidation sale and that ownere gave me the name
and address of where this piece once lived. So
there it is, sorry for rambling, but this is the
only Stoddard connection, that I know of. If,
you would like I can re visit the Historical Society and try to locate the Census. I am just
mad at myself for not being able to find them, they are in a diary book, I purchased just for this research, never have I been so intrigued
with a piece of furniture, go figure!
Thaks for letting me share.
