The Stoddard name is Stewart or Stywarden corrupted. Knights of the Garter Sept.
What I find on the Standard-Bearer title is that of a Viscompte DePulsdon no further info there.
: Curious as to whether or not, you've been able
: to find anything further about the Scottish
: Stoddards. I too have "heard"
: legends of Stoddard being a standard bearer
: for William but have found no specific
: evidence of such. Would love to find
: anything factual. My husband's line as far
: as we can tell goes through John of
: Wethersfield, CT which of course came from
: England. Any additional insight you could
: give to where in England would be helpful.
: Thanks

: my mother used to say stoddard was a norman
: name meaning standard bearer and the
: stoddards came to england with william the
: conqueror. i have since found it is a norman
: name having something to do with horse care
: and can find no evidence they came to
: england with william. many of my ancestors
: who were also stoddard ancestors came to
: england with william and that may be the
: reason mom thought the stoddards came with
: william,

: The Stoddard Family Association has records
: on
: over 150,000 Stoddards. Beause of the volume
: of keeping track of all of these names we
: have not done much with Scottish Clans, so
: we
: cannot answer your question.
: Perhaps you can find the information that
: you
: are looking for by searching for Scottish
: Clans on the internet.
