Posted by Peter Stoddard Our ancestor Emanuel Downing, Anthony's father-in-law, owned the house rented by John and Elizabeth Proctor, key figures in the Salem Witchcraft trials (and Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" John Proctor was hanged as a witch, but Elizabeth was spared because she was pregnant.
